Rewrite

Rewriting on your Mac

Download a local rewrite model or use Apple Intelligence, with no hosted rewrite provider.

In the appSettings → Rewrite → On this Mac

On this page

Choose a local option

On this Mac includes two kinds of model:

  • Downloaded models: Qwen and Gemma models stored and run by MicMyDay. They work on the app’s supported Apple silicon Macs with macOS 14 or later.
  • Apple built-in: Apple’s model, managed by macOS. It needs macOS 26 or later, an eligible Mac, and Apple Intelligence enabled and ready.

Neither option needs an API key for rewriting. Downloaded models need internet for the initial download; afterward, the rewrite itself runs locally.

Set up a downloaded model

  1. Open Settings → Rewrite and turn rewriting on.
  2. Choose On this Mac under Which model rewrites it.
  3. In the Model card, select the model you want.
  4. Press its Get control and wait for the download to finish.
  5. Allow preparation to complete, then choose a rewrite profile.

Downloading a model and selecting it are separate actions. A completed download shows Installed. Allow a little extra time for the first rewrite while the selected model loads.

Compare the downloaded models

ModelDownload shownWhere to start
Qwen3.5 2B1.3 GBThe smallest downloaded option. Try it for straightforward cleanup.
Qwen3.5 4B2.7 GBAn option for more demanding rewrite instructions.
Gemma 4 E2B3.1 GBAnother model to try for tone and phrasing.
Gemma 4 E4B4.2 GBThe largest option. Allow for slower processing on an 8 GB Mac.

Use Show all 5 models to see the whole catalog, including Apple built-in. Memory use and processing time vary by model and Mac. Try your usual dictations with a few profiles to find the model that suits your work.

Use the cancel control to stop a download or the trash button to remove an installed model. Deleting one frees its downloaded file; select another available model before dictating with rewriting.

Use Apple built-in

  1. Open System Settings → Apple Intelligence & Siri and enable Apple Intelligence on a supported Mac.
  2. Allow macOS to finish downloading and preparing its model.
  3. In MicMyDay, choose On this Mac → Apple built-in.
  4. Choose a rewrite profile and try a short dictation.

This option does not need a separate model download inside MicMyDay. macOS manages it.

If Apple’s model is unavailable

The app reports whether the Mac is ineligible, Apple Intelligence is disabled, or its model is not ready. If needed, check that Siri’s language matches the system language under General → Language & Region.

Speech and rewrite models each have their own language support. If Apple’s model is unavailable for your setup, choose a downloaded model that supports your language.

Get the best results

  • Preparing: allow the selected model to finish loading. The first rewrite may wait for it.
  • The dictation is too long: use a shorter recording and more concise profile instructions. Local models have a limited space for instructions, input, and output.
  • A model will not load: remove its download and download it again. Try another model if the problem continues.
  • The result is not useful: simplify the profile, test a shorter example, or choose a different model.

If a rewrite cannot finish, MicMyDay keeps the transcript so you can still use your words. See rewrite troubleshooting for further help.
