Getting started
MicMyDay is a menu-bar dictation app for macOS 14 or later.
- Open MicMyDay from Applications, then open its menu-bar menu and Settings.
- Choose a microphone and allow Microphone access. Check the input meter while speaking.
- Choose a transcription engine. Download a local Whisper or Parakeet model, choose Apple Speech, or configure a provider with your own API key.
- Place your cursor in a text field. Use your configured recording shortcut, speak, and stop the recording.
- Review the result. If automatic paste is unavailable, press ⌘V to paste from the clipboard.
To keep dictation on your Mac, use a downloaded local model and leave AI rewriting off, or use a rewrite server running on the same Mac.
Permissions & shortcuts
Manage macOS permissions in System Settings → Privacy & Security. MicMyDay's Settings → Permissions explains the access used by the app.
- No audio or a silent recording
- Allow Microphone access, select the intended input device in MicMyDay, and check that the microphone is not muted. Try a short recording with the input meter visible.
- Text is transcribed but not pasted
- Allow MicMyDay to post the paste shortcut using Accessibility access. Keep the cursor in an editable field. You can still paste manually with ⌘V when that access is unavailable.
- The recording shortcut does not respond
- Check the shortcut in Settings and avoid a combination already used by another app. Modifier-only shortcuts need Input Monitoring; regular key combinations do not. Follow any macOS prompt to reopen MicMyDay after changing permission.
- Apple Speech is unavailable
- Allow Speech Recognition access. With Prefer on-device recognition enabled, MicMyDay reports an error if your Mac or language cannot support it. Choose a local model, or disable that option to allow Apple server processing after sharing approval.
- A home-server provider cannot be reached
- Check the endpoint address and that the server is running and reachable from your Mac. Allow Local Network access if macOS asks for it. Public internet endpoints require HTTPS; HTTP connections to local servers are unencrypted.
Cloud & local providers
Cloud transcription can send audio to OpenAI or Google Gemini. AI rewriting sends text and rewrite instructions to its separately configured provider. Your provider account and usage charges are separate from your MicMyDay purchase.
For an authentication or model error, check the selected provider, API key, model access, and account billing. For a timeout or rate limit, check your connection and the provider's service status, then retry a short recording. Avoid sharing API keys in support messages.
For local models, finish downloading the selected model before recording and ensure your Mac has space for it. A downloaded local transcription model works offline; cloud rewriting still requires a connection if enabled.
MicMyDay asks before sending audio or text to a provider and remembers approval for that destination and content type. Reset approvals in Settings → Permissions to be asked again. See the provider data-handling details.
AirPods and wireless headsets
Recording through AirPods, or any Bluetooth headset, behaves differently from a built-in or wired microphone, and the reasons are outside any app's control.
Recording takes a moment to start. Bluetooth headphones play music over one profile and carry a microphone over another, so macOS has to renegotiate the link before it can hear you. That takes a few hundred milliseconds. MicMyDay shows a spinner in the overlay until the microphone is genuinely listening, so you know when to speak rather than losing your opening words.
Playback pauses while you dictate. Bluetooth cannot carry high quality stereo audio and a microphone at the same time, so anything playing would otherwise drop to mono and sound muffled for the whole recording. Rather than let that happen, MicMyDay pauses playback when you start and starts it again when you stop. On built-in, wired and USB microphones it fades the volume down instead, which is smoother and has none of these problems. Either behaviour can be turned off in Settings → Voice → Recording.
Apple added an interface for high quality recording over Bluetooth in 2025, but made it available only on iPhone and iPad, not on the Mac. If that changes, MicMyDay will use it.
If you want the fastest possible start and untouched playback, choose a wired or built-in microphone in Settings → Voice → Recording, and keep the AirPods for listening. macOS is happy for your input and output to be different devices.
Privacy & deleting data
- Recent transcripts: history stays on your Mac between launches. Search by transcript text or destination app, select an entry to review it, and use its copy control to reuse the text. Choose how many entries to keep in Settings → General. Remove individual entries in History, use Clear all there, or Clear now in Settings. Turning off Keep recent transcripts stops new entries and deletes the saved history file; clear history as well to remove entries still shown in the current session.
- Most recent result and clipboard: quit MicMyDay to clear its in-memory result. Copy another piece of text to replace the clipboard separately. Clipboard managers, synced devices, and apps you pasted into may retain their own copies.
- API keys and tokens: clear saved credentials in provider settings. Revoke keys with the provider if you want them to stop working. Removing the app does not necessarily remove Keychain entries.
- Downloaded models: remove them using the model manager in Settings.
- Data already sent to a provider: use that provider's privacy controls or contact its support team. Clearing local history or resetting sharing approvals cannot delete provider-held copies.
MicMyDay does not require a MicMyDay account. For requests about information you sent to the developer, including support correspondence, email . Read the privacy policy for retention and your rights.

Report a problem
Email support with:
- Your MicMyDay version and macOS version.
- Your Mac model, transcription engine, and whether AI rewriting is enabled.
- What you expected, what happened, and steps to reproduce it.
- The error message, with personal content, credentials, and private server addresses removed.
Use a short, non-sensitive test phrase if an example helps. Do not send API keys, passwords, private recordings, or full transcripts.
Feature ideas are welcome at the same support address. Describe what you want to do and how it would help your workflow. Information you send is covered by the support section of the privacy policy.
